BGIS is the marathon of BGMI. It starts in December, takes you through open qualifiers, rounds, a wildcard, semi-finals in Hyderabad and a survival stage, and ends three months later in a convention hall in Chennai. In 2026, after all of that, the winner was decided by four points.
The quick facts
- Champions: iQOO SOUL, 173 points (119 finish points, 54 placement points, 2 chicken dinners)
- Runners-up: Genesis Esports, 169 points
- Third: iQOO Orangutan, 132 points
- Prize pool: ₹4,00,00,000, with ₹1 crore to the champions
- Venue: Chennai Trade Centre, Nandambakkam
- Dates: 15 December 2025 to 29 March 2026
- Audience: more than 600,000 peak viewers, according to the organisers
From 1,016 teams to 16
The road to Chennai was long. According to the eSportStats breakdown of the format, Round 1 had 1,024 teams (1,016 from the open qualifiers plus eight from an earlier group stage). From there the field was cut down round after round: 512, 256, 128, then quarter-finals with 64, a wildcard round, semi-finals in Hyderabad, a survival stage, and finally the 16 teams who played the Grand Finals in Chennai on 27 to 29 March, 18 matches in all.
If your squad dropped out in Round 2, remember that you were still in the top 512. That is a sentence you can use.
The finish: four points
The Grand Finals table was one of the tightest of the year:
- 1. iQOO SOUL: 173
- 2. Genesis Esports: 169
- 3. iQOO Orangutan: 132
- 4. Victores Sumus: 128
- 5. Hero Xtreme Godlike: 118
- 6. K9 Esports: 117
- 7. iQOO Revenant XSpark: 114
- 8. Wyld Fangs: 112
The gap between first and second was four points. The gap between second and third was 37. That tells you everything about the final: two teams were in a private race, and everyone else was watching from the stands.
Genesis won the fight and lost the race
Here is the cruellest detail. Genesis scored 120 finish points, one more than SOUL's 119, the most in the whole field. They won the kills. But SOUL had 54 placement points to Genesis's 49, a five-point edge from surviving deeper into more circles. Five minus one is four. That is the whole tournament.
It is the best illustration of why BGMI scoring is more than "who kills the most." Our scoreboard guide walks through how a 13-finish game can be worth 23 points and a quiet win can be worth 10.
The players
Genesis's HunterZ had a Grand Finals to remember: 40 finishes in 18 matches (2.22 per match), the most of anyone, and the Tournament MVP award. He took a third of his team's finishes.
On the SOUL side the top three were LEGIT (38 finishes), Goblin (35) and Joker (29), with Nakul (17) adding the leadership. All four together: 119.
The awards:
- Tournament MVP: HunterZ (Genesis), ₹3 lakh
- Finals MVP: LEGIT (SOUL), ₹1.5 lakh
- Best IGL: Nakul (SOUL), ₹2 lakh
- Emerging Star: Detrox (Myth Official), ₹1 lakh
- Best Clutch: Termi (Learn from Past), ₹1 lakh
- Fan Favourite Team: SOUL, ₹1 lakh
The prize ladder
The top of the prize list shows how much the final mattered: ₹1 crore for first, ₹50 lakh for second and ₹35 lakh for third. A four-point gap between first and second was worth ₹50 lakh in prize money. Per point, that is ₹12.5 lakh. The most expensive points in Indian esports.
A fictional post-match conversation
A fictional chat between two friends, Priya (new to BGMI) and Rohan (has opinions about everything). The rules and numbers are real; the banter is ours.
Priya: So Genesis had more kills but still lost?
Rohan: Yes. They out-fought SOUL by one finish and out-lived them by five placement points. I mean, SOUL out-lived them.
Priya: That sounds like the worst possible way to lose.
Rohan: It is a very specific kind of heartbreak. The kind where the spreadsheet is on your side and the trophy is not.
Why it mattered
For SOUL it was the first major of 2026. For Genesis it was a painfully close second. For the scene, it was proof that the longest tournament on the calendar can still deliver a thriller at the end.
Looking back (added 25 October)
SOUL went on to win BMSD in October, which made them the only team to win two of the year's three majors. Genesis finished 12th at BMPS and 16th at BMSD, so their runner-up finish in Chennai is still the high point of their season. The full picture is in our season review.
