How to read a BGMI scoreboard in five minutes (with jokes)

WWCD, finishes, placement points, Smash Rule. A friendly guide to the numbers on every tournament table, using real results from BGIS and BMSD 2026.

You open a tournament stream and see a table full of numbers, some of them going up while others stay put. Someone in chat says "they just need a WWCD". You nod, then Google WWCD. This guide is for you. It takes about five minutes and the only prerequisite is a pulse.

The cheat sheet

  • WWCD: "Winner Winner Chicken Dinner." A match win. Teams are measured on how many they take.
  • Finishes (also called elims): the number of enemy players your team eliminated. 1 point each.
  • Placement points: points for where your team finished in the match.
  • Total: placement plus finishes, added across all matches.
  • Matches: a Grand Finals usually runs 18 (six a day over three days).

How placement points work

Here is the scale published for the BGIS 2026 Grand Finals:

  • 1st place (chicken dinner): 10 points
  • 2nd: 6
  • 3rd: 5
  • 4th: 4
  • 5th: 3
  • 6th: 2
  • 7th and 8th: 1 each
  • 9th to 16th: 0

Notice that winning is worth more than the next two places combined. That is intentional: the system wants teams to chase the win.

Putting it together: a real example

Take the BGIS 2026 champions. iQOO SOUL finished with 173 points. How? 119 finish points plus 54 placement points, and 2 chicken dinners along the way.

The runners-up were Genesis Esports with 169: 120 finish points plus 49 placement points. Genesis actually had more finishes than SOUL. They lost because SOUL survived better.

A small chat about maths

A fictional chat between two friends, Priya (new to BGMI) and Rohan (has opinions about everything). The rules and numbers are real; the banter is ours.

Priya: So if I win a match with 13 finishes, how many points is that?
Rohan: Ten for the win, thirteen for the finishes. Twenty-three.
Priya: And if I come 2nd with 13 finishes?
Rohan: Six plus thirteen. Nineteen.
Priya: So winning is only four more points?
Rohan: In that one match, yes. But a team that wins a match is also still alive at the end, which usually means it fought well. The scoreboard rewards both.
Priya: And if I hide in a bush and come 8th with zero kills?
Rohan: One point. Nice bush.

What happens when teams tie

Ties are broken in a set order. At BGIS 2026 the order was:

  • 1. most WWCDs across all matches
  • 2. most placement points
  • 3. most finish points
  • 4. best placement in the most recent match

That means a team with more chicken dinners always edges a team that only had more kills. The sport wants winners.

The Smash Rule

Some finals add a twist. At BMSD 2026, after Match 12 the organisers set a threshold at 10 points above the leader's total. A team that reaches it becomes "match point eligible" and then has to win a match to take the title. If nobody does by the last match, the highest total wins. We explained how it played out in our BMSD report.

Five things to look at on any scoreboard

  • The split. Is a team winning on finishes, on placement, or both? It tells you their style.
  • The WWCD column. A team with several wins is usually good at the end of a match.
  • The gap. If the leader is ahead by 25 points and a chicken dinner is worth 10 plus finishes, the race is more open than it looks.
  • The matches left. Six per day. Never write anyone off after one.
  • The bottom half. Last place at the end of Day 1 can be first at the end of the event. It has happened this year.

Where to practise

Our Stats page has real tables from BGIS, BMPS and BMSD 2026, with player stats you can sort and search. Open one and try the exercise: find the team with the best placement points, then the team with the most finishes. Are they the same team?
